The Basics

First, some basic principles to keep in mind:

  • Current values are calculated using the last closed price for the stock.

  • Shares Changed are the difference between the prior reported number of shares and the current reported number of shares.

  • Value change and stock price Performance is the difference in stock price between date reported and last closed price.

  • Results are calculated by the number of shares changed multiplied by the price difference between the reported date and the last closed price for the stock.

  • The information reported can be up to 1 year old. It is the latest reported by companies, but because of filing delays and length between filings the information is not "current". Most "old" filings are funds who merged, closed, change names, etc ... and no longer report their holdings.

  • The current holdings of a Fund is definitely different then reported. Funds buy/sell stocks daily.

  • We only track "common" stocks that are publicly traded - mostly on the major world exchanges. We don’t track bonds, other funds, options, warrants, or non-public companies.

  • Funds are allowed to list their holdings (the actual company name) however they want. This is a major problem when throughout the major exchanges; there may be several companies with very similar names.

  • If we can’t determine with confidence which company a fund is referring to then we won’t record it at all!

  • 13F holdings reported to the SEC use CUSIPs, that is why it is very easy/common to see major holders of most U.S. Stocks. Major (SEC defined, like either million in assets or a top ten holder of a security) holders report in an easy, distinguishable way.

  • We, however, count all holders which requires dissecting and disseminating the minor mutual fund filings (without easy CUSIPs to use) and try to match up names with companies.

NOTE: Many funds list "old" names of companies before name changes or mergers.

You can still get a great reality check with the information presented here.

Think twice if you are holding stock that most funds are selling!
